From Monolith to Modular Monolith: Practical Refactoring Strategies for Growing Startups

The Microservices Backlash
Over the last decade, countless startups jumped into microservices too early, inspired by Netflix and Uber architectures. Instead of increased velocity, they inherited distributed complexity: RPC latency, fractured deployment pipelines, and the dreaded distributed transaction coordination problem.
The Modular Monolith offers an elegant, pragmatic middle path: all application code runs within a single unified deployment unit, but internal code boundaries are strictly partitioned into isolated modules that communicate only via explicit public interfaces.
1. Enforcing Module Encapsulation
In a poorly designed monolithic codebase, any controller can import any database model and run raw queries across the entire schema. In a modular monolith:
- Public Module Facades: Modules expose clean interface contracts (e.g.,
BillingService.createInvoice()). Internal implementation classes and database queries remain strictly private to the module. - Linting & Compiler Enforced Boundaries: Tools like ESLint boundaries or TypeScript project references trigger compile-time errors if Module A attempts to directly import private files from Module B.
2. The Clear Path to Future Microservices
The beauty of a well-architected modular monolith is that if a specific module (such as video transcoding or payment processing) later requires independent scaling, it can be extracted into an independent microservice in days rather than months, because its domain boundaries and data contracts are already cleanly isolated.
