The Reality of Variable Network Connectivity
In many emerging markets and mobile environments, reliable high-speed 5G connectivity cannot be taken for granted. Users regularly navigate underground transit, intermittent cellular dead zones, or high-latency satellite connections. Modern web apps must function gracefully even when the device is completely disconnected.
1. The Service Worker Lifecycle and Cache Strategies
Service workers operate on an independent thread, acting as a programmable network proxy between the browser and the web. Choosing the right caching strategy per resource type is essential:
- Network-First with Cache Fallback: For dynamic content, navigational HTML, and real-time user feeds where fresh data is preferred but offline accessibility is required.
- Cache-First: For version-hashed static assets (JavaScript, CSS, fonts, webp graphics) that never change once built.
- Stale-While-Revalidate: Immediately serve cached content for instantaneous visual loading while silently fetching the latest update in the background.
2. Persistent Local Storage with IndexedDB
While Cache Storage holds network responses, IndexedDB provides a transactional NoSQL database right in the browser. When a user creates a new record offline, it is written to IndexedDB and marked as pending. When the browser regains connectivity, the Background Sync API reliably synchronizes pending changes with the central cloud server.
